Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux

Meta-analysis supports the traditional view that increasingly obese patients are at higher risk of gastro-oesophageal reflux. The direct causal nature of the relationship is ill-defined. However, reported symptoms are present 2–3 times more frequently in the obese compared to the general population. Detrimental factors such as higher gradient pressures, residual volumes and dysmotility may outweigh factors such as enhanced gastric emptying.
